Sundance RV Park – Cortez, CO
Sundance RV Park in Cortez, Co is a favorite because of the people! The camp hosts were so friendly and accommodating when we arrived in the middle of the night the first night we stayed here. Not many RV parks in the area are open year-round, and we got a very late start so my call to see if I could find a spot was last minute, but they gave us all the info we needed by phone to make it easy for us to come in after hours.
The next day, they bent over backward to help us. We checked out and were on the road to our next destination when I realized the RV had a tire problem. We returned to Sundance RV park and needed to stay another night due to flat rear dually tires. It was a Sunday, so no tire shops in town were open and it just wasn’t safe to keep going. The campground hosts loaned us tools, and a helping hand when we were assessing how badly the tires were damaged. They even helped us locate somewhere that could work on our rig the next day.
The best part for me? HOT, clean showers!
The next day, while the tires were being repaired we took a quick drive over to Mesa Verde National Park. It was so close, how could we not go check it out! There’s so much to do in this area, I hope we come back and stay for a few (more relaxing) days.

Mobile City RV Park – Grand Junction, CO
Mobile City RV Park has a taco truck right at the entrance! That makes this one an easy favorite!
It also has clean, hot showers and friendly people. The sites are spacious and well kept, too!
There is so much to do in this area! I am sad this was an area Travis stayed at longer than the rest of us since he was working here in our chasing camper, while the kids and I were finishing commitments in Arizona. We made a quick stop at Arches National Park on our way to Grand Junction, because we can never resist stopping at one of our favorite National Parks! Next time, I hope we can check out Colorado National Monument, Grand Mesa, and the boys especially can’t wait to see Dinosaur Journey.

Newberry Mountain RV Park – Newberry Springs, CA
Newberry Mountain RV Park is the perfect one-night stopover between our home base in AZ and a frequent work location in CA. It is convenient to the highway, which makes it easy to get in and out but it isn’t noisy!
This park is very close to Barstow, CA so if you need to run into town for supplies it is pretty quick and convenient. The owners have taken great care with designing the grounds and it’s so nice to have this lake oasis right outside your window in the middle of the desert!
On our most recent stop at Newberry Mountain, our 2 yr old was quite pleased to discover a rental paddleboat on the lake and friendly ducks! He was not so thrilled with us when we said no to trying out that paddleboat AND no to taking the ducks with us. Sorry, buddy!
Next time we stay here, hopefully, we’ll get in early enough that we can go explore Rainbow Basin!

Lake Havasu State Park – Lake Havasu City, AZ
Lake Havasu State Park could easily be a favorite because of the Park Ranger who allowed us to make a reservation the same day as our arrival. We came in pretty late due to a later than planned departure, but the next day we took a walk and discovered the lake in our backyard! It was such a peaceful morning view. Lake Havasu State Park is very well kept, the sites are huge and clean and the whole place is very quiet in the winter.
No visit to Lake Havasu City, AZ is complete without a stop at Ed’s Deli for the best sub sandwiches you will ever eat! An easy and fun day trip, Oatman, AZ is unlike most other places you will visit. Wild (friendly) burros roam the town that has more burros populating it than people. They always seem to be looking for visitors with the best treats. We arrived in Oatman at nearly 5pm and the burros were headed out of town for the evening, but still stopped to let us see them up close and personal for a few minutes.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways – Van Buren, MO
Big Spring Campground
Ozark National Scenic Riverways was a surprise stop when we got caught driving too late at night in a huge storm because we wanted to hike at Elephant Rocks State Park. It was quite an interesting experience to arrive in the middle of the night in torrential rains with lightning all around. There was very minimal cell phone service here, so I’d recommend planning your visit, having a map and just being better prepared overall than we were. The rest of the story is for another time, but we learned some lessons and had an adventure that night!
Eventually, we navigated our way through the narrow, winding, roads to Big Spring Campground. This park still ranks in our top 5 favorites of 2019 because it was such an amazing, truly fall setting. Plus, being November, it was completely empty and they had adorable lantern hooks outside. It was such a cozy feeling to be tucked back in the forest among the big trees, with fall colored leaves. For this AZ girl to see those leaves, it was magical! Unfortunately, we didn’t stay long or explore much because one of our kids was beginning to feel sick.
Next time we are here, we plan to check out the Jr. Ranger backpack filled with tools to explore the river and do some hiking. The rangers very kindly hooked us up with all sorts of Jr. Ranger swag but we decided we will have to come back and visit again to actually earn the badges.
